Counties of Sweden

The following is a brief about the 21 counties:

•Stockholm County was formed in 1714 and it was only since the start of 1968 that Stockholm became part of this county. It is located on the eastern side and has the Baltic Sea as a shoreline. Two organisations that are owned by the county are in control of the public transport. There is Storstockholms Lokaltrafik, SL, managing bus, tram and train services and Waxholmsbolaget managing boat services. The operation and maintenance of these services is done by several contractors. This county has more than one fifth of the Swedish population. This county has Stockholm as the capital and is divided into 26 municipalities.
•Uppsala County is above Stockholm County and also has the Baltic Sea shoreline. The county capital is the city of Uppsala and it is divided into 8 municipalities.
•Södermanland County is further south than Stockholm County and also has the Baltic Sea shoreline. At this current period of time this county is proudly the wealthiest in the whole of Sweden due to being the site of affluent cities. The county capital is the city ofNyköping and it is divided into 9 municipalities.
•Gotland County is an island situated in the Baltic Sea that is the biggest island under Swedish territory. The county capital is Visby (the biggest city on the island) and it is composed of one municipality, namely Gotland Municipality. Unlike other counties, there is no county council on this island.
•Blekinge County is the smallest county covering less than 1% of the country land area. It is at the bottom end, in the south of Sweden and has the Baltic Sea shoreline. The capital is the city of Karlskrona and it is divided into 5 municipalities.
•Skåne County was named in 1997 after two former counties joined together. It is the southern region of land in Sweden. Despite covering about 3% of country land area, this county is home to about 13% of the population. The county capital is Malmö and it is divided into 33 municipalities. The first motorway built in Sweden was between Malmö and Lund in 1953.
•Västmanland County borders Uppsala and Södermanland among other counties;it also lies at a portion of the shoreline of the country’s third biggest lake Mälaren and the Hjälmaren Lake. The capital is Västerås and it is divided into 10 municipalities.
•Jönköping County is in the centre of the lower part of the country. The capital is Jönköping and it is divided into 13 municipalities.
•Kalmar County occupies the lower eastern side of the country. It has the Baltic Sea shoreline and its upper western border is the county of Jönköping. The county includes the island of Öland in the Baltic Sea. The capital is Kalmar and it is divided into 10 municipalities and another 2 on the island.
•Halland County lies along the lower western side of the country. The shoreline of the Kattegat Sea is its western border. The capital is Halmstad and it is divided into 6 municipalities. The rock pop duo of Roxette is linked to this county.
•Kronoberg County is located in souther Sweden. Its capital is Växjö and it is divided into 8 municipalities.
•Östergötland County located on the lower eastern side of Sweden with the shoreline of the Baltic Sea. Its capital is Linköping and it is divided into 13 municipalities. The capital city and its twin city Norrköping form the fourth largest metropolitan area in the country.
•Västra Götaland County was formed in1998 when several counties merged. It is the second largest county according to population records and has about 17% of the population. Its capital is Gothenburg and it is divided into 49 municipalities.
• Värmland County is located in west central Sweden and borders some Norwegian counties as it is adjacent to the country of Norway. Its capital Karlstad and it has 16 municipalities.
•Gävleborg County was formed in 1762. It is located along the Baltic Sea in the eastern middle section of the country and is bordering Uppsala County along its southern border. Its capital is Gävle and is divided into 10 municipalities.
•Västernorrland County is located in the upper half of the country with access to the Gulf of Bothnia. To the south of its border is the Gävleborg County beneath it. Its capital is Härnösand and it is divided into 7 counties.
•Örebro County located in central Sweden. Its capital is Örebro and it is divided into 12 municipalities.
•Dalarna County received its new current name in 1997. It is in the middle of the country and extends to the border of Norway. Its capital is Falun and it is divided into 15 municipalities.
•Jämtland County was formed in 1810. This county is located in the middle to upper half of the western region of the country where it also borders Norway. Its capital is Östersund and it is divided into 8 municipalities.
•Västerbotten County is situated in northern Sweden which extends from the east to west borders of the country. It borders Norwegian counties and the Gulf of Bothnia. It is one of the counties with a greater amount of land space. Its capital is Umeå and it consists of 15 municipalities.•Norrbotten County is the most northern county. It borders Västerbotten County to the south, the Gulf of Bothnia to the southeast, to the northwest it borders Norway and to the northeast it is Finland. Its capital is Luleå and it is divided into 14 municipalities.
