The following are among some significant inventions created by Swedes:
•Rune Elmqvist developed a small battery-driven pacemaker in 1958. The first operation when a pacemaker was placed into the heart region was surgically performed at the end of 1958. Although the device only lasted for a few hours and there was a need for further adjustments, the patient (Arne Larsson) survived these tests and lived for decades, right up to 2001. This patient lived to the age of 86 and outlived the inventor and surgeon.
•Astra Zeneca developed Losec. Losec is recognised as a common drug medicine for ulcers and was the world's best-selling drug in the 1990s.
